We can hear it now: “Just one more coin!” It was an addiction to some, the pixelated characters collecting bits and bobs, driving their scores through the very top of the screen. But death here was temporary until one inserted another Space Buck. It was a haven for outcasts and the popular alike, and Kill Screen, for all of their success, was not the focal point. They were destined to hang in the darkness, the glow of the nearest arcade game glinting off the olive oil that drenched the microwaved pizza they religiously consumed. It was all about achieving the historic feat of reaching the “kill screen,” a forbidden area of the game never intended to be reached. This would prove, once and for all, that they had conquered the game and could finally move on, like a bounty hunter of little consequence. Members Qong and Ixa became obsessed with a particular game called “The Life and Death of Boor Tingus,” a side-scrolling action game where the titular Boor must escape the evil clutches of capitalism by fighting through office buildings, budget meetings, and the ogres of Human Resources. While Qong and Ixa had never held real jobs, the mesmerizing colors and sounds compelled them to vanquish office parties and withholding tax. Dear Audionauts, we must spoil this story quickly: Boor Tingus never did submit his letter of resignation. The arcade was razed in a counterattack during Funk Wars VI, leaving behind only memories of sights and sounds. Kill Screen’s debut album is an ode to Boor Tingus, culled from their memory, remixed, and spit out for a toe-tappin’, chip-tune adventure through white-collar work. Fast-paced synth and crackling drums drive this masterpiece, ultimately ensuring that play is a lot more fun than work.
