Berenices Brew

Original Release Date: 12/21/3330

Juniper and Violet Berenice had already completed what was referred to as their sophomore album (Demos had been floating around but had been mostly legend until their discovery in 5031) when the idea that their first single, Mortar & Pistol, should be accompanied by a second B-side in order to entice listeners. While they bandied about tracks from the full release, the mostly unfinished A Dozen Reasons To Say I Hate You kept coming into focus. The track was inspired by a former love interest who had jilted Juniper, then, in a hubristic bit of tomfoolery, disguised himself as a different creature to eventually jilt Violet. When the truth came to light (though suspicions had abounded from the beginning), the sisters could not bear to seek revenge, for it was not written in their blood signatures. Instead, unbeknownst to them, the very plants who had helped to provide the melodies to their tasty beats had used a discarded Communicatrix (which had been junked, torn apart, and composted to provide nutrients throughout the greenhouse) to make a very specific, and deadly, phone call. Like prisoners of war, they worked in secret to rebuild the device, seeking the gentleman caller's information through the vast underground communications network known as SPORE. Posing as a concerned citizen, they pinned a series of unsolved murders on their target and hired a galactic assassin to complete the dirty deed. Following the successful disappearance of the rapscallion, the sisters discovered a bouquet of a dozen red rosettäs and a note. Not, of course, from their former lover, but from the assassin. In part, it read, "To the Berenices: your little problem won't be a problem anymore. What's left of him will make sure your friends have plenty to eat..." Alongside the note and flowers was a burlap sack of moist, nutrient-rich compost. The flowers dared not speak the truth of the matter, and Juniper and Violet had their doubts, but it was the dense, unmistakable mood in the air that helped them connect the dots. They swore to remove the moment and their experience from their memory and channel it into a more viable vessel. A Dozen Reasons To Say I Hate You remained unfinished until it became clear that its presence on the single would ensure that they would be absolved of the truth in their bones. Released several months before their self-titled offering, the B-Side became a gargantuan hit. The dark undertones and rumored backstory were enough to create a grand mythos that radiated around the sisters, and to see them and their menagerie of plants play live became an experience not to be missed. We are proud, dear Audionauts, to announce the official decoding and release of this long-sought-after B-Side. So dig in, grab a scoop of revenge, and channel your rage into a tasty beat that cries out to all creatures who have been double-crossed by the potential of love.
